The Roman empire was already established in Israel, specifically Jerusalem. 70 CE, and a group of Jewish rebels have brought their rebellion to a violent head against the Roman empire. Roman troops lay waist to Jerusalem and many of it’s citizens. One sect of Judean way of life was a sect that lived just outside of Jerusalem, and at the point of being taken by the Roman army in their desert mountain fortress, they first lay fire to all their crops and take their own lives.
